THE WINNERS of the North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) ‘Design Your Dream Jetty’ competition have been announced.
The lucky winners of the NQBP ‘Design Your Dream Jetty’ art competition were selected from about 100 entries, earlier this month.
NQBP CEO Brendan Webb said the competition provided Bowen youth with an opportunity to create artwork to represent their ideas for a future Jetty.
“We’ve received fantastic ideas from the young people of Bowen,” Mr Webb said.
“The entries showcased not only creativity in their designs but also practical safety and accessibility features, such as lighting.
“Overwhelmingly, the entries showed how Bowen’s young people envision their future jetty as a place for everyone to enjoy.
“A place where families can relax, fish, sightsee, and indulge in fish and chips or ice cream.”
The competition is part of the government-owned port authority’s project to develop a concept design for the Bowen Jetty.
Mr Webb said acknowledging history, providing public amenities and the opportunity for recreational activities would be core considerations in the design.
“Dating from the late 1860s, the current structure is nearing its end of life. However, thanks to a $50m commitment from the State Government, the future of the jetty has been assured,” he said.
The ‘Design Your Dream Jetty’ competition was open to children living in Bowen and the winners of each of the three categories are as follows.
High School Category winner – $150 EFTPOS card – Sarah, aged 14; Encouragement Award – $100 EFTPOS card – Isaac, aged 14.
Upper Primary School Category (Year 4 to Year 6) winner – $100 EFTPOS card – Matilda, aged 10; Encouragement Award – $75 EFTPOS card – Ella, aged 10.
Lower Primary School Category (Prep to Year 3) winner – $75 EFTPOS card – Piper, aged 7; Encouragement Award – $50 EFTPOS card – Elsie, aged 8.
The design competition is one of the ways NQBP is involving the Bowen community in the Bowen Jetty project.
