Isla’s journey: A successful turtle rescue and release

Must read

ECO BARGE Clean Seas Inc. is proud to share the heartwarming recovery and release of Isla, a juvenile green sea turtle.

The recovery was made possible through the dedicated collaboration of Mackay District Turtle Watch (MDTW) and the ongoing support of Cruise Whitsundays.

Isla was discovered overheated and weak, stranded in the sun.

Thanks to the quick response of the Mackay District Turtle Watch team, she was safely transported to the Whitsunday Turtle Rescue Centre, where the Eco Barge turtle care team stepped in to provide the intensive care she needed.

Upon arrival, Isla was malnourished and suffering from float syndrome – a condition that prevents turtles from diving for food.

Over several months, the turtle care team worked tirelessly to nurse her back to health.

Isla began to thrive, showing a love for cuttlefish and gradually regaining her strength.

On release day, Isla made a triumphant return to her home waters, near Seaforth, close to Rabbit Island.

Watching her swim strongly back to her natural feeding grounds was a moment of joy and triumph for everyone involved.

Eco Barge founder Libby Edge said: “Isla’s recovery highlights the incredible teamwork and dedication of our partners.

“A huge thank you to Mackay District Turtle Watch for their swift response and to Cruise Whitsundays for their continued support in making these rescues and recoveries possible.

“Every turtle we save is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we work together to protect our marine life.”

Ali Yates from Mackay District Turtle Watch added: “I’d like to say a big thank you to my friend Owen Pershouse, who asked me if I wanted to go out on the water in his boat that day.

“If we hadn’t been there, Isla most surely would have perished in the heat.

“Thanks Owen, for caring and bringing Isla back in your boat.”

This success story is a testament to the care, passion, and support behind the Whitsunday Turtle Rescue Centre.

“Thanks to our volunteers, partners and collaborators, turtles like Isla have a second chance at life,” Libby said.

“We also want to remind the community that everyone can play a part in helping our local sea turtles.

“If you come across a sea turtle and are unsure if it needs to be rescued, please call 1300 130 372.

“Our team will guide you through the steps needed to make a successful rescue and ensure the turtle receives the care it needs.

“Thank you to Mackay District Turtle Watch and Cruise Whitsundays for being part of Isla’s journey and recovery.”

Since 2013, the Whitsunday Turtle Rescue Centre (WTRC) has cared for more than 272 turtles.

Now, it’s time for an upgrade, and they’re reaching out for local business to support to help improve their facilities.
