ZERO WASTE Whitsundays is hosting an ‘Accelerated Intro to DIY Cleaners’ Workshop, at Airlie Health Hub, Cannonvale, on Saturday, June 3.
The workshop will help people understand how they can live a sustainable, low-tox life at home and in their businesses.
Lucy Smith has lived in the Whitsundays for 10 years and, in 2020, co-founded Zero Waste Whitsundays along with Karen Jacobsen.
Mrs Smith said that Zero Waste Whitsundays had built a community following on Facebook and Instagram, sharing information, ‘Meatless Monday’ recipes, and practical advice on how to reduce an individual’s environmental impact.
Mrs Smith and Mrs Jacobsen also write a weekly column for the Whitsunday News newspaper.
“After being approached by a number of businesses and friends on advice about how they can really make a difference, I realised there is a lack of in-person support in the region to help people become more sustainable,” Mrs Smith said.
“So, Zero Waste Solutions was born, with the help of some amazing and successful women in my life, as well as the complete support of my partner.”
Zero Waste Whitsundays strives to change people’s mindsets, encouraging them to adopt a sustainable approach in life by following the three Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
“The term Zero Waste can be a daunting subject, as the idea of a circular system is hard to fathom with our current one-way industrial system stubbornly locked in place,” Mrs Smith said.
“I wanted to create a system where I can help individuals streamline their homes and businesses to operate more sustainably.
“Since this can seem impossible or too difficult, I wanted to make the process seamless, making it accessible to all.”
Zero Waste Whitsundays offers in-home and business consultations, and has recently launched workshops that cover a variety of subjects, with sustainability and low-tox as the main theme.
These are designed so that the participant can gain the knowledge and maintain the changes in their everyday lives.
“Here we will make all four cleaners we make in the series in one afternoon. It will be an incredible fact filled day, but perfect for those who cannot attend the midweek workshops.”
