Half-million for Nursing Home

After years of battling, sometimes despair creeping in, clouds were lifted when news of a $508,000 grant from the Federal Government arrived this week. President of Committee, Mrs Margaret Rigby, said that she was ‘floating on air’ and would take a considerable time to return to earth.

Queen of Diamonds Title to Proserpine again!

Joanne Camm proudly displays her favourite prize, a $1,200 diamond ring, for winning the 1984 title. She worked hard with family and friends to raise almost $18,000 for the Heart Foundation.

Eighty Present

Eighty persons were present at the RSL Hall, last Monday, to hear Northern Region P.E.P. Programme Consultant Mrs Margo Harney. The aim of the programme is to prepare senior High School students either for tertiary education or into trade work and commerce. Employers are to be co-opted to carry out the programme with work experience. High School Principal Mr David Sutton spoke favourably of this action.

Business Change

The late Joe Afribo’s Fruit Mart, in Main Street, has been taken over by Mr KM (Sars) Spencer.

Oil Shale Exploration closes

Extraction of 57,000 tonnes of oil shale from the Condor site, south of Proserpine, over a seven-year programme, starting in 1979, is due to be completed shortly. It was stated by senior geologist Mr Peter Green that there would be no further development for at least five years.

Motorcycle Club

Thirty-eight starters contested the first annual ‘Ray Dair’ Shield motorcycle enduro event, held at Dair’s Kelsey Creek property, on Sunday. Overall class winner was Les Wilson, runner-up was Charles Dair and Michael Muller was third.

Bowls

Local Fishermen’s Club will join bowlers for mixed bowls, this Sunday afternoon. One said, ‘Playing bowls is just like fishing, you only need a good arm swing, judgement of distance, fingertip touch and a bit of luck.’

Golf

Last weekend, at Proserpine Golf Club, the annual inter-town best ball team match between Proserpine, Bowen and Collinsville was held. The host team Proserpine was victorious.

Patron – Air Sea Rescue Squad

Mr Geoff Muntz, member for Whitsunday, is now officially patron of Air Sea Rescue Squad. Last Wednesday, he presented the squad with a Queensland flag. The land for the squad’s radio base, at Cannonvale, is awaiting Council approval.
