THIS YEAR’S Immerse installation is well underway ahead of the Great Barrier Reef Festival, taking place from August 4 to 7, 2022.
Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef at this year’s festival with an exciting addition to the program, ‘Immerse Whitsundays’.
‘Immerse Whitsundays’ is an art installation under the monumental fig tree on the Airlie Beach Foreshore, which can be viewed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the festival.
The installation is a combination of reef creature sculptures and corals, made out of recycled plastic and marine debris, and animated projections to bring the display to life.
It will represent the reef’s ‘Great Eight’ marine creatures: Shark, giant clam, clownfish, turtle, manta ray, potato cod, maori wrasse and whale.
Local artists and community members have been working on the design of the installation in the lead-up to the festival and are excited to be putting it all together to display throughout the weekend.
The artists involved are Anita Pender, Brigitte Peel, Liz Knight, Margie Murphy and Margaret Burgess.
