Whitsunday News Column

Must read

Issue 113

WATCHING Queen Elizabeth’s funeral on the television, on Monday night, was quite surreal.

Like so many people, I have grown up with her – I remember doing wooden jigsaw puzzles with pictures of Elizabeth and her sister Margaret on them.

And biscuit tins had photos of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip on them!

So many hours of TV footage. So many books filled with images.

It is the end of an era, despite the fact I think Charles will be a good king and William also, after his father.

It is a new, modern era, and it will be very interesting to see how Britain handles it.

Meanwhile

There’s so much going on in the beautiful Whitsundays – it’s a challenge to get everything in the paper, each week.

I hope you agree, however, that it’s a very varied paper this week, spanning the whole region.

From flower shows to Book Week (more pics page 15) and everything in between – we really are a diverse bunch in the Whitsundays.

New mayor

The Whitsunday News editorial team attended the first council meeting with new Mayor Julie Hall at the helm, last Wednesday.

For a first meeting, she did very well, if I may so (having attended countless council meetings as a journalist, during the past 30 years).

There was a public gallery of about 10 people, who had come to witness what we, the media, were witnessing.

Anyone can come along and observe council meetings. You can also ask questions – see council’s website for more details.

And if you can’t make it to the actual meetings – which are held all over the region – you can watch the live stream videos.

Councillors shape the future of our region.

Lastly

Please get out and support the Whitsundays Arts Festival this week – the full program is on page 13 of this newspaper – there is plenty of great stuff to dive into.

As the festival’s print media partner, I see firsthand how hard the committee and their helpers work to get these things up and running. It is a massive task and they do it for the love of it.

As always, thanks for reading this newspaper.

Deborah.
