Airlie Beach Bowls

Must read

WE ARE all just so lucky to live in such an idyllic place in the world which sometimes we take for granted but we certainly don’t take our bowls or our bowling club for granted.

Tuesday afternoon was social bowls where skipper John Trembath was at his absolute best with one of nature’s gentlemen Mario De Martini at lead and visiting bowler Robyn Roberts at second easily beating all comers and the effervescent Maureen Barnard won the prestigious Health Hub award.

Wednesday afternoon social bowls saw 24 bowlers competing for the first prize which saw Helen Ward at skipper with the very likeable Keith Bates at lead and Tony Kelly playing out of his skin at second completely overwhelming the opposition players and the very attractive and talented Lu Rogan was delighted to receive the prestigious Health Hub award.

Saturday saw the second round of Scroungers spring competition after Tony Kelly, Warren Mills, Rick Galea, Tony Whitehorn, John Askew and Merve Stewart all first round winners with Warren ‘Millsie’ Mills proving too strong to be the winner.

Andy McDougall won the B grade points total, the second round winners were Ladda Purdie, Betty Nicole, Nik Fernbach and Steve Lawrie, with Betty Nicole proving just what a fantastic bowler she is, with a phenomenal victory, and Tony Whitehorn won the Group B.

Sunday afternoon social bowls saw an amazing victory going to skipper Tony Whitehorn showing everyone that he’s maintaining his awesome form with his lovely sister-in-law Helen Ward at second and the much-improved Paul Tobias at lead, and were the gallant winners of the prize.

Meanwhile, in Rockhampton, the Bowls Premier League semi-finals was being held and our club was represented by two teams – John Matterson’s team of Mark Mawson at lead with Alan Pershouse at second who performed admirably.

And Manny Isgro’s team of the likeable Luke Kinnear and the irreplaceable Warren Mills at second who continued their fantastic form to beat all comers and will be off to the national finals, in November. We are so very proud of the two teams.
