THE FEDERAL Member for Dawson and former Whitsunday Mayor, Andrew Willcox, has written to the Queensland State Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey, requesting an update on the progress of a replacement contractor for the incomplete roadworks in the Bowen area.
Eight months ago, the original contractor for the project was placed into administration, where workers downed tools and walked off the job.
“This is just not acceptable,” Mr Willcox said.
“Our main roads are the connection to everything that matters.
“To markets, to medical services, to schools and further education, and to families and loved ones.
To have safe and functional roads should not be something we have to fight for, complain about or suffer through.”
Member for Burdekin Dale Last said he had ramped up the pressure on the government to secure a contractor to complete the project.
“Currently, around Bowen is a 30km section of road works on the Bruce Highway that has sat dormant for seven months because this state government failed to do its due diligence with contractors,” Mr Last said.
“Seven months of inaction on a 30km section of the Bruce Highway is not good enough and I have ramped up the pressure on the government to secure a contractor to complete this project.”
