RACISM is a funny thing.
I was watching the TV news this morning and there was a segment about the new UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Amongst other things, the journalist said he was the first UK Prime Minister ‘of colour’.
I thought this a strange phrase but, nope, there it was on the screen in front of me, in the text at the bottom of the TV screen.
In the 21st century, should we really be saying things like this? I am sure Mr Sunak has got their on his own merit.
Would we say anything about his ‘colour’ if he were white?
What was interesting is that he is (also) the country’s youngest leader in 200 years and he is also a millionaire, apparently (according to the TV news).
So much going on
This coming Monday, October 31, is Halloween, if scaring yourself and your neighbours is ‘your thing’.
Last year, there were some very well decorated houses and streets so, if you want to get in the paper, let us know and we’ll take a photo of your house!
And the next day, Tuesday, is Melbourne Cup Day.
Falling early this year – the first Tuesday of the month is November 1 – don’t get taken short.
Make sure you book something (if you’re lucky enough to get out of working on Melbourne Cup Day!).
See our stories on pages 19 and 21.
And lastly
The WN team is very excited to be attending the Whitsundays Tourism Awards, this Saturday night, at the Whitsunday Sailing Club.
With so much positivity and conviviality in the air, you can’t help feeling happy, not to mention the great food and the champagne, which will be flowing!
See our awards feature ‘Celebrating Success’ on pages 9 to 12.
We promise to take photos on the night!
As always, thanks for reading this newspaper.
Deborah.
