PROSERPINE State High School students gathered together on Monday, March 20, to watch 12 of their classmates and one teacher shave or cut their hair for the World’s Greatest Shave.
So far, the school has raised more than $13,000, surpassing their $10,000 goal.
Teacher Andrew Cox has been leading the charge for the World’s Greatest Shave, at Proserpine Sate High, for over 20 years.
“We started it in 2000 and that was because we lost a student called Peter Cook, in 1999, to acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
So, the student council back then started it and I promised them that I would keep it going for the length of time I was at the school.”
Since 2000, Proserpine State High School has raised more than $100,000 for the leukemia foundation through their annual World’s Greatest Shave fundraisers and are steadily approaching the $150,000 mark.
“We will continue donations until the end of this term, so people can still go online and do it there,” Mr Cox said.
Mr Cox, like so many others, has a personal connection to the leukemia fundraising efforts and feels very proud of the high school students each year.
“It’s fantastic, it’s a privilege to be involved.
“Unfortunately, I spent a lot of time in in the leukaemia ward myself, my dad passed away from AML, so I saw how it affects people and a lot of these kids will also have a story.
“It’s a great thing that they pay forward, they’re great kids.”
The student who raised the most money was Year Eight student Luke Dwyer, who surpassed his goal.
“It feels pretty good to know that I’m making a difference for other people around Australia,” Luke said.
