WE WENT to Bowen for a day out, on Sunday, and it was marvellous.
I don’t need to tell you Bowen-ites how fantastic your town is, but we ‘southerners’ should get up there more often, now the road’s a lot better!
It took us 50 minutes, from Cannonvale, and it was a lovely drive on a beautiful sunny morning, only hitting roadworks for the last 10 minutes or so.
We were rewarded for getting up early with the most beautiful walk on Horseshoe Bay beach, followed by a lovely brekkie at the café, and then a dip in the oh-so-clear ocean.
Just around the corner were the Bowen markets, so we popped in for some browsing, and then back into the car and across town to the jetty, for some fish spotting and a nice stretch of the legs.
A quick whizz up Flagstaff Hill for a fix of the view (it doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen it, it still has that wow factor) and a sticky beak at the new café (very nice).
Then down the hill to Bird’s Fish Bar for some of the best fish and chips I have ever had (we had the mackerel and it was sublime).
We were home by mid-afternoon, and I felt like I’d been on holiday! Thanks Bowen.
Meanwhile…
As I sit here writing this column, on Tuesday, March 28, I can’t help thinking about what a different scenario it was, six years ago today.
We awoke to find one of the biggest cyclones to ever hit the east coast – Tropical Cyclone Debbie – was bearing down on the region.
What followed was one of the most unique experiences of my life (and of course for others too) combining lows and highs, on a daily basis.
But we survived and, for those who love living in the tropics, we will no doubt survive another cyclone (only, hopefully, a bit smaller and not quite as vicious as TCD!).
Lastly
I have said countless times in this column how it staggers me just how much goes on in this region.
But I have said enough already, this week, so I’ll leave you to find the stories yourself!
