Whitsunday News Column

Must read

AND JUST like that, we’re halfway through autumn.

Seasons are only three months apiece, admittedly, but it feels like just a week or so ago that I was saying in this column…autumn has just started!

I know there have been a few rainy squalls here and there – including a bit of a deluge yesterday! – but overall we have been having beautiful warm weather with a slight breeze – just perfect for school holiday visitors.

I know Queensland and NT schools went back to school on Monday (April 17) but other states don’t return to school until next week – or even the following week for some – and there are still plenty of people spending their hard-earned holiday dollars in the region.

Meanwhile

April is, of course, known for Anzac Day and this is the last Whitsunday News newspaper before Tuesday, April 25, 2023.

We have therefore brought you the Anzac Day service times this week – see page 11.

We contact all the RSLs in the region, every year, and ask for their Anzac Day service times.

It’s something we do completely free of charge, as a way of giving back to the community and supporting the work that the RSLs do, week in and week out.

Lots happening

The news this week is very diverse – more so than usual.

Save Our Foreshore is finally having its day in court and will have its chance to appeal council’s decision regarding the proposed Port of Airlie high-rise, in the Planning and Environment Court.

See our story page XXX.

And a local skipper has captured a very interesting natural phenomenon in the Whitsundays – see story page XXX.

Get active

Meanwhile, council’s ‘Get Active’ Family Fun Days continue around the region – last weekend it was Bowen’s turn. See photos page 19.

And talking of council, we have a special Proserpine Entertainment Centre feature this week (pages 14 – 15) recounting the rebirth of the much loved community hub, following its destruction during TC Debbie.

A phoenix arising out of the ashes!

As always, thanks for reading this newspaper.

Deborah.
