Whitsunday News Column

Must read

THE NUMBER of new people arriving in Australia, in the next two years, is predicted to be 715,000, according to news reports.

That is quite a lot of people – the size of a medium to large sized town – and apparently it is 470,000 more people than was forecast.

The return of international students and working holidaymakers make up a large number of the incoming people.

Which is all fine – and I understand we need skilled workers in Australia, and that education is a big export for our country – but we also need accommodation to house them, medical centres, good transportation, more schools and roads.

I think infrastructure is one of Australia’s – and the Whitsundays’ – biggest challenges in the next few years.

So why, then, is the Labor Government proposing infrastructure cuts in the Federal Budget next week, with potentially hundreds of infrastructure projects being scrapped?

Meanwhile…

Mother’s Day is fast approaching – on Sunday, May 14, 2023 – so, if you own a business, don’t miss out on the local dollar!

We will be running our ‘Shop Locally this Mother’s Day’ feature in our Wednesday, May 10, 2023, issue (email Barb Ironside on advertise@whitsundaynews.net.au).

This gives all our readers four days to buy your mum something locally (instead of jumping online in a mad panic and paying extra for premium delivery!).

The local dollar really does keep going around and around in our economy.

Talking of which…

The gift that keeps on giving

The Whitsunday News newspaper offers subscriptions – in printed and digital format – from just $102 a year.

The printed paper is posted straight to your post box (at the normal Australia Post rate).

The digital paper is delivered to your device every week, via a reminder, with a sample of that week’s news plus a link.

Click on the link, and all that week’s news is right before you, in full colour – exactly the same as the printed newspaper.

Great for people who find it hard to get to the shops each week (although we do sell seven days/week) or for people with bad memories…! Never miss another issue.

As always, thanks for reading this newspaper.

Deborah.
