In the news…
I THINK it is a win for everyone that the words ‘maximum building heights’ have been left in the Major Planning Amendment – see our story page 1.
Without these words, there is no safety net preventing council executives recommending high-rise development plans be approved by councillors.
It will be very interesting to see what happens when the Save Our Foreshore versus council court case resumes.
Island dream
And it’s great news to see someone with a dream and a vision take over one of our islands (story page 5).
And it’s not just any old island – it’s Hook Island.
Hook is one of the most beloved islands of them all, amongst locals and past locals, with its pristine beauty and memories of the old underwater observatory!
We will bring you updates as they unfold.
Show time!
It’s nearly show time in the Whitsundays, with organising committees approaching a crescendo in their planning.
We are lucky in that we have two shows – Show Whitsunday (in Proserpine) and the Bowen Show. If you plan your week properly, you can go to both!
Rest assured, we will be bringing you plenty of information over the coming weeks and in the lead-up to the shows in June.
Get voting
Get voting for both Airlie Beach and Bowen in the ‘Top Tourism Town’ Awards.
Airlie Beach is up for Top small Tourism Town and Bowen is in the running for Top Tourism Town – so you can vote for both as they’re in different categories. See our story page 8.
And lastly…
It’s great to see Federal representatives David Littleproud MP and Andrew Willcox MP in the region, this week.
Both MPs spoke in Cannonvale, on Tuesday evening (May 16), and were due to speak in Bowen, on Wednesday evening (May 17), thanks to the respective Chambers of Commerce.
We will bring you reports on both events in next week’s WN (Wednesday, May 24).
As always, thanks for reading this newspaper.
Deborah.
