Whitsundays Writers Festival returns

Must read

By Jess Begun president Whitsundays Arts Festival

IT IS with great pleasure and honour that I have been asked to serve as the patron of this year’s renewed Whitsundays Writers Festival returning to Airlie Beach on September 6 – 8, after a seven-year hiatus.

The 2024 Whitsundays Writers Festival is set to present leading Australian writers in stimulating and interactive events that both celebrate and create valuable opportunities for aspiring writers and, of course, avid readers.

These events include your chance to write a love letter to Queensland, engage in a workshop about writing memoirs, submit an unpublished manuscript, find out what makes a great crime novel, or hear from the winner of Australia’s most prestigious writing award, the Miles Franklin Literary Award.

As a community, we are unbelievably fortunate to have a dedicated team of highly qualified artists and professionals who have created this amazing event as volunteers.

The president of the Whitsundays Writers Festival is Karen Jacobsen, who is also the co-founder of the Whitsundays Songwriter Festival, a fabulous event proudly supported by the Whitsundays Arts Festival.

Karen continues to give so much to the cultural strength of our community.

The behind-the-scenes duo of the Whitsundays Writers Festival are Julia and Richard Evans, who moved to our community from Melbourne and, with their expertise in strategising community projects, have contributed enormously to the outstanding diversity and quality of the Writers Festival.

I believe that festivals provide the best opportunities for our creative community to celebrate the arts and meet others in the community.

The Writers Festival is the perfect place for aspiring writers to meet other aspirants, as well as those in our community, who are well along the path to success.

At this special event, you can learn skills and share your creative journey and, most of all, be inspired and encouraged to continue the hard work of creating.

Arts and cultural events are a key component of resilient and thriving communities.

I encourage you to come to many of the exciting events planned over the three-day festival

After three years of presenting the Whitsundays Arts Festival, our team is now focused on mentoring and auspicing art groups such as the Whitsundays Songwriter Festival.

With the renewal of the Whitsundays Writers Festival the region is becoming alive with arts events.

We will continue to actively promote the arts in our region through mentorship and take advantage of every opportunity to support our local creative community and lobby for the arts in our region.
