Council News
Councillors met recently with officials from the Department of Local Government re. the new Town Plan.
Council has decided not to enter Queensland Tidy Towns competition for 1985, as the judging takes place at a bad time of year for this area.
Councillors re-affirmed support for the Proserpine River Dam proposal.
Shale Oil
Japanese interests have requested a further 42,000 tonnes of oil shale from Condor deposits, on Goorganga Plains, for investigation purposes.
Closure of Commercial Bank
The old Commercial Bank, now merged with Westpac, closed its doors after more than fifty-two years of operation in Proserpine. ‘The Commercial’ opened in a small shop attached to what was Shepherd’s Furniture Warehouse, on January 27, 1932.It was later relocated to the corner of Main and Chapman Streets. The premises will be for sale by auction at a later date.
Proposed Probus Club
Airlie Rotary Club is holding an ‘interest meeting’ to discuss forming a Probus Club for retired and semi-retired business and professional men, in the Whitsunday area.
Bloomsbury Ball
Last Friday, more than 200 people attended Bloomsbury’s Ball, at the town’s community hall. One of the organisers, Mrs Mavis Camm, stated that monies raised would go towards improvements to the hall. Patrons from ’83 had booked seats in advance for this year’s enjoyable event.
South Molle Improvements
$15m has been expended to complete construction on the island up to the period February 1985.
Rugby League
Proserpine Brahams won the 4X [Beer] Whitsunday 1984 Premiership with a convincing 25/10 win over the highly fancied Collinsville Miners.
Weather
Winter is on the way out. Spring is on its way with increasing temperatures. Rainfall in the Shire is limited with 6.9 at the Post Office, Kelsey Creek 3.1, Up River1.6 and Strathdickie 0.5.
