Transforming marine debris into valuable products

Must read

ECO BARGE Clean Seas will be able to transform even more marine debris into valuable resources, thanks to a grant.

The volunteer organisation does regular trips around the islands and mainland to clean beaches of debris and stop it harming wildlife and going into waterways.

Since starting in 2009, Eco Barge has removed 253,400 kgs of debris from the Whitsundays.

Now, the environmental organisation has announced that it has been selected as one of six successful applicants for a grant under the Queensland Circular Economy (Industry-Research) program.

The program aims to drive industry-led research and innovation, to transition from the traditional take-make-waste model to a sustainable circular economy.

In a circular economy, products and materials are kept in circulation through processes such as maintenance, re-use, refurbishment, re-manufacture and recycling.

“This approach focuses on designing out waste and pollution, circulating products and materials at their highest value, and regenerating natural systems,” Eco Barge Clean Seas Inc. CEO and founder Libby Edge said.

“Eco Barge is dedicated to transforming marine debris, collected by our passionate volunteers, into valuable and saleable products.

“This grant will enable us to enhance our efforts in keeping our seas clean, while providing opportunities for skills development and program growth, that align with the principles of the circular economy.”

Ms Edge said key project objectives included the following.

1

Eliminate Waste and Pollution:

“Our initiative addresses the pressing issue of marine debris in the Greater Whitsunday Region. By collecting and processing this waste, we aim to prevent harm to our marine ecosystems and turn it into valuable resources.”

2

Circulate Materials at Their Highest Value:

“Utilising advanced recycling technologies, we ensure that materials are processed effectively, creating a closed-loop system where resources are continuously reused and repurposed, maximizing their lifecycle and value.

“Through these initiatives, Eco Barge is committed to contributing to the regeneration of natural systems and promoting sustainable practices.

“By actively participating in the circular economy, we strive to create a more resilient and sustainable future for the Greater Whitsunday Region.”

The Circular Economy Program is supported by the Resources Centre of Excellence and the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation.
