Eldorado Theatre to Close This Month

Proserpine’s Eldorado Cinema, on the corner of Main and Chapman Streets, will close after a final screening on December 7, only one month before reaching its 50th anniversary.

It began screening motion pictures on a regular basis when acquired by Mr. W. J. Ironside, in 1935.

Dwindling attendances were given as the reason for its closure following its purchase by three local businessmen.

Netball Court Subsidy

A State Government grant of $720 was announced to the Whitsunday Community Centre at Cannonvale. This will go towards the cost of building two netball courts. The courts, costing $7,500, had been played on throughout the season by 100 women and 60 children.

Stinger Nets

Council is to assess the feasibility of these at beaches in the Shire.

Christian Outreach Centre

The Christian Outreach Centre has arranged two evenings of square dancing for families. They have also entered a float in the Harvest Festival.

Food Prices in Proserpine

A costing of 10 grocery items found Proserpine prices were similar to those in Bowen and Mackay shops.

Kennel Club Formed

A well attended and enthusiastic meeting of dog trainers and breeders formed The Proserpine/Whitsunday Kennel and Trialling Club. It was agreed monthly meetings would be staged.

High School Speech Night

Principal David Sutton introduced a lively night of music, baton twirling, singing and gymnastics, highlighted by guest speaker the beautiful Miss Queensland, Georgia Dunn. Pillip Dafarra and Reginald Muller won the Senior and Junior Dux Awards respectively.

Proserpine Painting Paragons

The Proserpine Painting Paragonswill present their seventh annual amateur art exhibition, at the Cultural Hall, next week. A highlight will be a section containing portraits of local identities.

White Night of Tennis

The wind-up of another fine year of tennis was attended by over 130 people. Sportsman and sportswoman of the year awards went to Bob Daniels and Kerry Minon.

Cricket

The Magpies currently lead the table, having beaten the Colts, partly due to an aggressive 59 by Col Crothall.
