Canegrowers Optimistic
Queensland Canegrowers were hopeful of positive assistance from State and Federal Governments at a meeting in Brisbane. The Q.C.G.C., representing all of Queensland’s 6,000 plus growers, believes price support, which would bring the price of cane to $240 tonnes or $20 per tonne of sugar, is the only way to ensure continuation of the industry in Queensland.
Rapid Growth in Proserpine and Beach Areas Predicted
Mackay Electricity Board expects expansion of demand at Cannonvale, Airlie and Dingo Beach. Private developers are also opening up subdivisions in Bloomsbury and Midge Point.
Additional Police Needed to Cope with Population Growth
The Mackay Police District, which includes Proserpine and Whitsunday, has increased from 30,000 in 1981 and now stands at about 120,000. The area continues to rate as one of the highest fatal and injury accident districts in Queensland. There has been an average number of 37 fatal accidents per year for the last 15 years.
Cr. Bill McGrath Bows Out
After 15 years on the council, Bill has decided to retire. He thanked all the people who have helped and supported him during that time.
Bore Drilling in Proserpine
Many successful drills have taken place in the area to supplement reticulated water in the dryer months. Garden lovers have always chafed at the irrigation restrictions imposed on them.
Nude Beaches in the Whitsundays
A recently published guide entitled ‘Bare Facts’ listing nude beaches in Australia claims that there are 11 nude beaches in the Whitsundays. The Guardian suggests that one of them is situated at the secluded end of Shingley Beach.
State Windsurfing at Airlie
The 1985 Queensland Windsurfing Titles will be held at Airlie Beach on the Queen’s Birthday Weekend, in June.
Water Police
Two policemen with their own boat will be attached to Cannonvale Police Station.
Mackay Permanent Building Society Expansion
The branch of the building society in Main Street, Proserpine, will also now be open on Saturday mornings from 9am until 11 am. The increased opening times proved very popular with customers.
Netball Courts in Cannonvale
$700 was granted towards these well used courts, which catered for competitions involving 100 women and Saturday morning fixtures for 60 children. These courts were situated opposite Centro, next to the traffic lights.
