Bowen Gumlu Growers Association: Advocacy a key focus in 2025

Must read

2025 has certainly kicked off with some challenges and, while the rain is welcomed by many in our industry, our thoughts are with residents, business owners and growers further north, as they assess the damage caused by recent flooding.

This wet season has reminded us that our focus on advocacy for the region is a top priority for Bowen Gumlu Growers Association, and we have both understanding and support from the three levels of government.

Last week, the State Government released details on its long-term plan to future proof Queensland’s primary industries, committing to increasing the sector’s output to $30bn, by 2030.

At BGGA, we welcome the initiative and plans to establish a 25-year blueprint to ensure our growers remain competitive, productive, profitable and resilient.

Later in February, BGGA president Carl Walker will be participating in the Department of Primary Industries forum, which aims to develop this blueprint alongside key industry representatives from across the state.

Representation from our region will ensure our key priorities around cost of production pressures, supply chain, workforce, market access, biosecurity and water security are front of mind and form the basis of the blueprint.

Over the past 10 years, BGGA has participated in the Queensland Horticulture Council (QHC), working with other regional grower groups to shape horticulture policy in Queensland.

While each region faces different challenges, the QHC provides an opportunity, where appropriate, to develop a co-ordinated approach to advocacy and representation, at a state and federal level.

BGGA CEO Jenn Honnery was recently elected as chair for the QHC and is looking forward to using her skills to ensure the council continues to be a strong voice for growers.

BGGA president Carl Walker and vice president Kayla Castorina are also members of QHC, guaranteeing strong representation for our region into the future.
