Zero Waste Whitsundays by co-founders Karen Jacobsen and Lucy Smith

Must read

COMPOSTING just became more appealing!

More than 40 per cent of a standard household’s waste is organic waste or can be compostable, so why isn’t everyone doing it?

For some households, composting is inaccessible and overwhelming, but do we have news for you.

Why not enter a matchmaking service for the good of the planet?

Peels.app fills the gap created when ShareWaste ended operations, in 2024.

This project is led by Danny White, a product designer with 10 years’ experience working on services including kickstarter, chatGPT and Airbnb.

Danny helped start the composting program at PocketCityFarms and previously built a traveller’s guide to reduce food waste.

Peels.app connects those with food scraps to those who can compost them. A simple and effective way to remove organics from landfill completely.

This can be a neighbour, a farmer or community garden, who can use the organic matter to build soil quality.

To take advantage of this almost effortless option, visit peels.app. The form takes five minutes to add your location, or to search for local drop-off points.

You do not need to put your full name, address or identity in, and you can liaise by messaging directly.

Right now, peels.app is community led and we would love to see this take off in the Whitsundays.

A non-commercial project, the service has been created to be accessible to all communities. It’s free and easy to sign up with two options of listings.

You can ‘Accept’ food scraps to be dropped at your home or garden, or have your business tagged as a ‘Pickup Point’ to collect coffee grounds and organic waste (no meat, no dairy).

Let’s get those banana peel icons growing and create a Zero Waste Whitsundays!

Has this reminder piqued your interest to kickstart your composting in your own yard?

It’s way easier than you may be thinking. Bokashi bins are the go, if you live in an apartment or have limited space.

Worm farms are excellent if you have children or want to create fertilizer for your plants and veggies.

If you are lucky enough to have a garden, larger composting bins can process green waste and organics onsite.

It can be as quick and simple as a few clicks on your device to set it up.
