Proserpine Bowls: Exciting father and son duel

Must read

THERE WERE no social bowls played, on Wednesday, due to rain on Tuesday night giving the green another good soaking.

Mary Hedgelong and Lee King accompanied Heather to St Helen’s PAH, on Thursday, and had a lovely time celebrating president Joan Chapman’s day.

Joan has had a long involvement in the sport of lawn bowls at club, district and state level and has declared that retirement time is coming up, at the end of this year.

All present thanked Joan for her ongoing involvement in bowls.

On Saturday afternoon, five games of Club Championship Singles were played.

Strong winds made all who were playing really have to concentrate on each and every bowl that they put down…..and the game scores reflected just how well everyone dealt with the weather conditions.

Philip Brown got off to an early start but Kendall Watts was able to claw back the early deficit to come within striking distance towards the end of the game. Philip hung on to win 25 – 23.

Harry Craig played his father Marcus Craig and it was Harry in the lead for the early part of the game, with Marcus taking the lead briefly in the seventh end and holding a small margin for a couple of ends, before Harry took the lead again.

As so often happens when you get within the range to finish the game, those last few shots seem to be very elusive.

Harry sat on 23, while Marcus chipped away at the margin over the last seven ends to be 23 all on the 27th end.

Marcus Craig scored the two shots on the 28th end to win this contest 25 – 23.

Another great game was Brett Saroglia versus Toby Craig.

Toby got the early start in this game, with Brett clawing back the deficit during the middle section of the game, before Toby took off again and Brett had to dig in hard to regain that margin.

From then on, the game could have been anyone’s and the last four ends shows just how close the game was, with single shots all that were conceded by either player.

In the final score, Brett Saroglia defeated Toby Craig 25 – 24 in a 30-end thriller.

Dale Haack played Gavin Noonan and it was Gavin that got the early start in this contest with Dale catching up in the middle section of the game and then taking the lead in the 18th end.

Dale Haack finished off the contest well with scores on the last three ends to defeat Gavin Noonan 26 – 16.

Andrew Bell showed his prowess in Singles this week, only allowing Vince Olsen just the two ends in their 12-end game.

Andrew Bell defeated Vince Olsen 25 – 2.

Well done to all players who played in these very challenging conditions.

On Sunday, we had eight players for social bowls and played 3 Bowl pairs.

Arthur Griffith and Bruce Uhe defeated Alen Sanderson and Sandy Daffara 30 – 22; Trevor Parsons and Philip Brown defeated Wayne Melrose and Heather Brown 23 – 20.

Pennants begins this weekend with home games for Division 1, on Saturday, and Division 5, on Sunday; and away games for Division 5, on Saturday, and Division 1, on Sunday.
