Council Votes $100,000 to Rural Roads

Cr Rowley described the condition of rural roads as shocking and neglected. He therefore moved that money should be creamed off the coming budget for special rural road improvement. The motion was carried.

Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal

Arrangements for Sunday’s collection were well in hand. Twenty High School students had volunteered.

Road Toll Rises

Police statistics for the Mackay Area show 10 deaths in the last six months, with other injury producing accidents amounting to 125.

Tree Destruction in Cannonvale

Local branch of the Wildlife Preservation Society criticised the Council’s irresponsible attitude towards conservation. Tree destruction in the Cannonvale subdivision had continued recently with apparently no effort to replace the trees.

Road To Collinsville Considered

A direct road to Collinsville was being proposed. The road to the dam would cover some distance with a further 14 kilometres to the Proserpine Shire Boundary and a total of 69 kilometres through the Bowen Shire.

Australian National Rodeo Championships 1986

Organiser Reg. Gillen reported a good response had been shown to early planning for what would be the largest sporting event ever staged in Proserpine.

‘Quota Student of The Year’

Carol Spencer represented Proserpine High School in this event and, although not the winner, Carol was a credit to her school.

Kelsey Creek Manual Telephone Exchange Closes

From next month, subscribers will become the last manual exchange to be replaced by efficient automatic telephones, which will replace forever a personal touch of bygone days.

Local Yacht in Los Angeles to Hawaii Transpac Race

‘Spirit of Queensland’, skippered by Chris Dorrough, is participating in this race across the Pacific Ocean. By last Sunday, they still had 700 miles to go.

Henry Lamond Remembered

Bill Lamond unveiled a commemorative plaque to his father Henry G. on South Molle. Henry owned the Island from 1927 until 1937, considering it ‘an Eden’. Eventually, he sold it to the Bauer Family, which established it as a tourist resort.

Abell Point Development

Council approval is being sought to construct a new jetty to serve fishermen and boating people. Additional marinas are being planned for Shute Harbour and Airlie Beach.

Several teams at ‘A’ and ‘B’ Grade got away to a flying start for the season.

Foley Shield Match, Burdekin beat Whitsunday 50-10.
