Apprentice Wins Bennett Bursary

Second year apprentice Stephen Curti received the award from Mill Chief Engineer Frank Doolan. The bursary was awarded in honour of Norman Bennett.

Major Gold Lotto Win

An anonymous Proserpine resident won $178,828.21 in the ‘Gold Lotto’ Draw, when they purchased a ticket in this week’s Lotto Draw at the Proserpine Newsagency.

Obituary

Leo Cecini died suddenly in his Marathon Street home, aged 81 years. ‘Jock’ Cecini had farmed for many years with his brothers, in the Gregory area, before retiring to Proserpine.

Ethanol Production

Several letters to the Guardian this week were urging the Government to investigate the viability of producing ethanol from sugar cane. One reader predicts that this will be the ‘lead-free petrol of the future.’

Kelsey Creek Exchange Closure

A farewell gathering of ‘family’ and friends of Marie and Phil Fraser gathered at Kelsey Creek QCWA Hall, after the closure of the manual exchange. Proserpine Telecom Reps thanked Marie on behalf of her family of former subscribers, for her service over seventeen years.

Bowen Seniors Perform at St. James’

A group of 39 Bowen Senior Citizens entertained their Proserpine counterparts with accomplished instrumental music, songs and some clowning, filling the church with an audience of 140. John Klohs and Doreen Wesley welcomed and thanked the visitors.

Whitsunday Rugby League Premiership

A very closely contested finals between the three teams: Collinsville Minors, Bowen Brothers and Proserpine Brahmans were locked together evenly on points. Miners were awarded the premiership on a points for/against basis.

Resurgence of Cricket

96 players have nominated from six teams [new teams will be Norths and Souths] for the upcoming season, the largest number for many years. Four permanent venues will be used including pitches at primary schools at Proserpine and the Beach.
