A LOCAL choir donned nuns’ habits and channelled their inner angels recently for a very special performance.
The Choral C Choir enjoys singing and performing around the region, including at the Proserpine Nursing home and at events such as the annual Flower Show, the Multicultural Festival and ‘Christmas in July’ at the BIG4 Whitsunday Caravan Park.
Recently, they were asked to join with the Little Red Theatre Company for the finale of the stage show ‘Sisters are Doing it For Themselves’ (loosely based on the hit movie ‘Sister Act’) at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre.
The choir sang Hail Holy Queen (part in Latin) as they made their entrance from the rear of the auditorium onto the stage, followed by The Greatest Medley Ever Told, before breaking into Ain’t No Mountain High Enough and finishing, to uproarious applause, with Shout!
The unusual pairing was facilitated by choir conductor and musical director Zak Jaggard, who had had previous dealings with the Little Red Theatre Company, currently on a regional tour.
“They [Little Red Theatre Company] wanted a choir at the end of the performance, and I said, these ladies just love to perform!” Mr Jaggard said.
“They were brilliant on the night – they absolutely brought the house down.”
Mr Jaggard, a former jazz singer who is now retired, has been involved with the group for about five years.
“I had never led a choir before but I said, I’m happy to give it a go. And I’m still doing the job five years later!
“It’s a lovely atmosphere when we practise – we sing for a couple of hours – about one-and-three-quarter hours.
“They are pretty good, I think!”.
The performing social singing group has about 24 members made up of men and women, but mostly women.
The average age is between 60 and 70 years old, although there are some younger members as well.
The group was formed 12 years ago and practises every Wednesday morning at the PCYC, Jubilee Pocket, from 10.15am.
Choir members contribute $2 per week towards expenses including the choir’s colourful uniforms (tropical shirts and white pants), plus other outfits as required, and equipment such as music stands.
The group also has a Christmas lunch every year.
Anyone interested in joining the group can pop down to the PCYC on a Wednesday morning for an obligation free ‘taster’ session, to see if it’s for them.
Or call Zak Jaggard on 0476 063 503 or email Zak on beechwood44@gmail.com.
Locals can also support the Choral C Choir when they perform on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the Lions Community Markets, on the Airlie Beach Foreshore.
