WE HAD a couple of nice days, early last week, so there was at least one good opportunity to get out a bit wider and enjoy some nice conditions over the school holidays.
By the reports, there were a few fish biting over the large tide period.
The big run can make it a bit hard to fish the deeper water in close but some of the wider grounds fish well and there were some good catches of reds and nannies on the shoals, out near the reef.
For those that fished the reef, there were the usual trout and red throat about.
There’s a lot of tuna about, at the moment, with some really good sized longtail amongst them.
They can be found pretty well anywhere around the islands and out wider, so keep an eye out for diving birds and you’ll find the tuna.
Casting or jigging metal slugs or jigs work well but they’ll also hit poppers and stickbaits etc. The islands are also fishing well for the bottom dwellers like trout and grassies too.
There’s some cracker queenies around too and you don’t have to go too far out to find them.
In around Shute has always been a good queeny fishery and you can have some pretty good sessions fishing from the fishing pontoon.
The diamond trevally are in too and there’s plenty of them around the pontoon.
They’ll take plenty of different lures but small soft plastics and vibes work well for them.
If you do hook up, try to land the fish quickly as the big groper that hang around there have been pretty hungry.
Even with the crappy weather returning, the Proserpine River and the other local creeks should fish OK this week, as the tides are a bit smaller.
There’s plenty of crabs on the move too so it’s definitely worth running a few pots.
The lake fished pretty well over the good weather last week too but things will be a bit slower now, with the stronger winds and cooler nights.
We do have the full moon coming up, next week, so that will help with the barra and hopefully the wind will settle by then.
Well, it looks like another week of southeasters for now, so the inshore areas will be the places to head.
Good luck if you head out for a fish.
