Bowls Club goes from strength to strength

Must read

THE AIRLIE Beach Bowls Club is going from strength to strength, with the installation of its new cover and a $100,000 upgrade in the wings, thanks to the new LNP Queensland Government.

The upgrade was an election promise, last October, and includes the installation of solar panels and improvements to the clubhouse ceiling.

MP for Whitsunday Amanda Camm said it would help the club to keep the well-used community facility looking its best.

“It is great to be able to support Airlie Beach Bowls Club, a community organisation that relies on the hard work of an aging volunteer base,” Ms Camm said at the time.

“The clubhouse is a meeting point, not just for the bowling community but the whole community, so upgrades to the facility will be widely felt.”

Meanwhile, it’s business as usual, and bowling continues at the much loved club, with members excited about the arrival of the long-awaited cover.

Tuesday saw a draw between Skippers Joan McGrath with Greg Fennell at lead and Tony Whitehorn and Mel Fennell at lead 22 all.

The overall winners being Regina Aquilina’s team 23-21 with Mark Mawson and Gina Passfield a new promising bowler.

Wednesday saw 20 bowlers where we welcomed Malcolm Townson from Glasshouse Mountains Bowling Club in the Sunshine Coast as well as Roslyn and Ian Macrae from Woodend Bowls Club in the Macedon Ranges Victoria.

The big winners of the day were skipper Betty Whitehorn with Roslyn MacRae at lead against Regina Aquilina and Ian MaCrae well done ladies.

No Business House Bowls due to State of Origin.

Friday morning with Endeavour Foundation really improving their bowls skills Michael and Jett with Kathy and Keana are showing that with practice they can be Gold Medallist’s at the 2026 Disability Games, we all are so proud of their fantastic improvement.

The Christian College of 20 bowlers are showing massive improvement with Riley Jacobson and Shannon Matthews really improving and impressing, as well as Nadia Piggott and Ella Jones also excelling there are a few other students whom with application and concentration could become excellent bowlers.

Saturday morning saw Division One play North Mackay with all three teams playing impressive bowls newcomers Tony Whitehorn and John Matterson fitting into the team like a duck to water.

Whilst at home against the extremely talented South Suburban team Manny Isgro’s team won whilst Bob McMahon and Harrison Quads team were gallant in defeat.

Division Three were away at Serena and also played well but went down but on Sunday at home were victorious against North Mackay.

Division 5 played Proserpine and were soundly beaten but played well and on Sunday against RSL Memorial were fantastic and turned the screws for a resounding victory congratulations to skippers Mervyn Stewart and John Askew and their team
