LAST week’s club night was a memorable event for the Cannonvale Cannons swimming team, with Jax Clayworth breaking a 23-year-old club record.
Abel Morris, a local resident and former Cannons swimmer, made a special appearance to present the new record holder.
Morris, who set the 11-year-old 100m Butterfly record back on March 7, 2001, passed the honour to Jax Clayworth.
Clayworth broke the long-standing record with a time of 1:21.39, beating Morris’ previous time by .20 seconds.
Jax also set a new record in the 11-years 100IM with a time of 1:21.59.
Morris, who trained with the Cannons from 1997 to 2003, still holds four club records: the 9-years 200IM, the 10-years 100m and 200m Breaststroke, and the 11-years 200IM.
The club greatly appreciates Abel for taking the time to present this award to his successor.
The evening continued with upgrade awards, recognising Ruby Lawson for her move to the 200IM, Kaitlyn Moon for her advancement to the 50m Backstroke, Gracie Laguna to the 50m Butterfly, Pippa Laguna to the 50m Backstroke, and Liam Filewood for his upgrade to the 50m Breaststroke.
Isaac Pisaniello was also recognised for his stella 50m Freestyle, which earned him the coaches award this week.
Following the presentations, the pool was awash with exciting races and numerous personal bests.
Special congratulations go to Maeve Dichiera, Bonnie and Gracie Crichton, and Don Algie, who all achieved PBs in every race they competed in.
Other notable performers included Gracie Laguna, Kaitlyn Moon, Lennon Wild, Matilda Nicholes, Andie Reynolds, Celeste Orenshaw and Erik Hinrichsen, who all showed impressive time improvements.
The Cannons will keep up their training over the holiday break, as they prepare for the Pioneer Transition Long Course Carnival, on October 5 and 6, kicking off the upcoming carnival season.
