LATIN Madness Airlie Beach has kickstarted its Salsa classes, at Evolve Studios, for beginners and salsa masters alike.
Beginners can attend Tuesday night classes and learn basic step, cross body lead, and left and right turns.
The beginner 2 class will improve upon the basics, refining connection, and learn walkthrough, inline, and open break turns.
For those who have mastered the basics and want to progress their dancing, an intermediate class is held on Friday nights, at 7pm, and will teach interesting turn patterns and then add increasing levels of complexity.
Carl and Laura are a couple who recently moved to the area and started up the salsa classes.
They are experienced Salsa and Bachata dancers with extensive experience between them.
Carl has been dancing salsa in New Zealand, since 2016, after moving to a new city and needing a way to make friends.
“I danced with this school for about four years, during which time I performed in over a dozen routines, including two competitions that took me across the ditch to Sydney,” Carl said.
“After this, I was lucky enough to spend a year teaching, as well as to choreograph a routine and lead a team to perform in a festival.
“Dancing has been more sporadic since COVID, but I am excited to bring it back to both my life and to the culture of Airlie Beach.”
Laura grew up in Colombia and has been dancing since childhood.
“When I was 10, I wanted to dance with all the boys and my cousin was kind enough to teach me,” Laura said.
“I stood on her feet, and she stepped me through all the foot patterns.
“I have since found better ways to teach, but aways have this to fall back on, should all else fail.
“Growing up in Colombia, we learned to just dance, rules be damned, and so I believe learning to dance should be fun before anything else.”
