CONTINUING its commitment to marine conservation, Daydream Island Resort & Living Reef is thrilled to announce that Living Reef Manager Lisa McMullen has been appointed a Master Reef Guide by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
As a Master Reef Guide, Lisa is now part of a passionate team of ‘reef ambassadors’ responsible for sharing the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and educating consumers on the conservation projects being carried out in the Whitsundays.
Nominated by the team at Daydream Island Resort & Living Reef, Lisa had to demonstrate her knowledge of the cultural, biological, ecological and geological values of the Great Barrier Reef, as well as complete the Reef Discovery Course and ‘Eye on the Reef’ training to become an accredited Master Reef Guide.
According to Lisa, it’s an honour to receive recognition for her interest and dedication to restoring the reef around Daydream Island Resort & Living Reef.
“It’s an amazing feeling to be acknowledged as a Master Reef Guide,” she said.
“Having worked on and off the reef for a while now, I’ve met a number of other Master Reef Guides, who were all such incredible and inspiring people and so passionate about the marine environment and its conservation.
“To be able to join them and the Master Reef guide alumni is a great privilege.”
Following her Master Reef Guide training, Lisa is implementing a number of new initiatives at Daydream Island Resort & Living Reef.
These include more education sessions and tours for guests to get greater insight into the important work Daydream Island’s marine biologists are doing, such as the Lover’s Cove reef restoration projects.
“At the moment, we’re developing the education aspect of the Living Reef so that people can learn more about the amazing animals we have,” Lisa said.
“We’re also creating a species list from sightings around the island and logging these on the Eye on the Reef sightings networks.
“We see some pretty amazing animals around the island including manta rays in winter and juvenile black tip reef sharks in summer, so we want visitors to be able to witness this as well.”
Daydream Island Resort & Living Reef is proud of its strong commitment to marine conservation and boasts one of Australia’s most unique reef experiences, the amazing Living Reef, home to more than 100 sea creatures.
It is also the only island in the Whitsundays to be awarded Eco Tourism certification from Eco Tourism Australia.
