Local festival supports local talent

Must read

FESTIVALS are part of the Australian music landscape but few events support local talent in the way that the Airlie Beach Festival of Music does.

Now in its 13th year, the Airlie Beach Festival of Music (ABFoM) has become one of the standout festivals on the annual calendar.

But while most festivals are all about the big names and headline acts that sell tickets, the Airlie Beach Festival of Music offers that plus so much more.

The beloved local festival has always championed local musicians and always includes local talent in the line-up.

Over the years, this has grown and there are now 19 local bands, hailing from Townsville Mackay and Airlie Beach, performing on the big stage at this year’s festival (November 7-9, 2025).

The local acts performing at this year’s ABFoM are: Josiah Samual, Rebelquin, Tim Griffin, Off Tap. Simon Briley, Scotty Wilson, Tammy Moxon, Tiffany Grace, The Swine Club, Jolly Jingo, Zed Charles, Sam McCann, Kieran McCarthy, Dallas Steele, Matt Angell, Viva Band, Rollercam, Dave Helgi Johan and David Flower.

“Most festivals don’t have local acts, only headliners, and that sets us apart,” festival founder Gavin ‘Butto’ Butlin said.

“We are proud of being able to offer local artists the opportunity.

“It’s a chance for locals to play their original songs rather than covers, which is what they play every day of the week.

“The Airlie Beach Festival of Music opens the doors for local artists to shine.

“There are thousands of local artists but only a handful of festivals and the artists just can’t get on them [other festivals].

“We are very lucky to have all this – these amazing artists in this town.

“It’s a party town, so they all live here and play here – in venues like Magnums and KC’s – but now they can play at a festival as well.”

Mr Butlin said nearly one third of the acts, this year, were locals.

“They are all so incredibly talented and now they are playing at, and being part of, the festival.

“Festivalgoers will be able to catch them at venues all over town.”

In total, there are 60 bands performing across three big days, right across Airlie Beach during the day, and in the Main Tent during the evenings.

The festival transforms the town into the ultimate music playground with intimate gigs at cafes and bars in and around the main street.

Venues hosting gigs in the day include: The Anchor Bar, Beaches, Boaty’s, Elementa, KC’s Bar & Grill, Magnums, Northerlies and Paddy’s Shenanigans (all ticketed).

Free performances will take place at Colonial Palms, Lola’s Bar, Paradiso, Sorrento’s and The Treehouse.

All this alongside unforgettable main stage performances under the Main Tent, right on the edge of the Coral Sea!
