Proserpine Main Street Mall Rejected
Over 40 local businessmen voted against the proposed creation of a mall in Main Street at a public meeting called by the Chamber of Commerce. The proposal was put to try and recover trade being lost to Bowen and Mackay but it appeared that the cost would be prohibitive.
Anzac Day Speech at High School
Parish priest Fr. Thomas Guard, who served as chaplain in the Second World War for which he was awarded an O.B.E., gave the main address at the Anzac Day Ceremony. He told students that possession of nuclear weapons was the only deterrent to foreign aggressors and Australian forces were ‘mighty glad’ to receive assistance from America, in 1942.
Haze Over Hamilton
A smoke haze hung over Hamilton Island, on Sunday, following a fire in the main complex, which caused $5 million worth of damage.

Daycare Mothers Needed for Airlie
Proserpine Shire Daycare Centre is seeking caring adults. The centre has 41 children in care at Proserpine but there is a waiting list of children needing care at the Beach.
Strip Show Controversy
The Shire Council banned a performance of ‘Cheeky Chaps Meet the Ritzy Titzy Girls’, a strip show booked for the Proserpine Cultural Hall, on Sunday. The Cultural Hall manager warned that the Council may be faced with a possible fine, if it went ahead with the ban.

Infrastructure Study to Cope with Population Growth
The 1981 Census counted the population of the Beach and Islands as 5,126, a 13.4 per cent growth from 1976. The township of Proserpine stood at 3,058 in 1981, just 0.3 per cent growth. By 2000, the population of the Beach area is expected to be between 20,000 and 22,000. Local member Geoff Muntz predicted that long-term priorities would be water supply, marine facilities, roads and sewerage.
