To Improve District Phones
Major improvements to local telephone services have been announced by Telecom. The last remaining manual exchange at Kelsey Creek is to be converted to automatic, together with improved services to the coast.

Another House for Teachers
Another house for teaching staff, a high-set, three-bedroom home, is to be built in Proserpine, making a total of 10 public service residences. Mr Geoff Muntz, member for Whitsunday, said he had just been informed by the Minister for Works, Mr Wharton.

$500 for Nursing Home
President of the Proserpine Nursing Home Committee, Mrs Margaret Rigby, was happy to accept a donation of $500 from Mrs Vonnie Hickmott, WM of the Denison Chapter of OES. Mrs Hickmott made the presentation on behalf of the Chapter at Mrs Ruth Balma’s Glen Isla home.

Mutiny on the Reef
Spokesman for Whitsunday Air Sea Rescue said that ‘Mutiny’, which was owned by a Sydney man, was reported to his group at 2.30am on Friday but floated herself off at high tide about 8.30pm the same day. Damage was minor. ‘Mutiny’ had been anchored off Hardy Reef and was blown onto the coral by 10-15 knot winds.

Probus Club Formed
About 30 retired and semi-retired businessmen attended the inaugural meeting of the Probus Club, at the Sailing Club, on Tuesday morning. Ron McDowall, organiser of this interest meeting, spoke about the history of Probus.

Cannonvale Tops School Sports Day
Cannonvale’s Gold House carries off the overall championship, at the District School Sports, with the house taking out Girls and Boys Aggregate.
Also competing were four houses, from Proserpine State School, and teams from St Cath’s Catholic College and Hayman Island as well. The Hayman Island children slept at Cool Palms Youth Camp, the night before.
It was a splendid day with much parent support. The program was kept rolling along by state school sports master, Mr Les Stagg.

Freedom from Accident Award
A Freedom from Accident award for 1983 was presented to Rex Robinson, postman in Proserpine, for nine years of accident-free driving.

Writers’ Group Gets Off the Ground
For the first time, Proserpine has a society for amateur writers. They will begin regular weekly gatherings in October. There will, of course, be caffeine breaks at half-time – so essential for writers – so there can be an exchange of ideas.
