‘Save The Town’ Committee Formed

Growing fear that the town economy would suffer from the plight the Canegrowing Industry was undergoing, has led to the formation of a committee to support local businesses.

Earthquake Stirs Locals

At just before 10.30pm, on Friday, an earth tremor was felt throughout the district. It lasted a few seconds. The Guardian editor remembers three earthquakes in the previous 50 years, which jangled the cups and saucers.

High School Musical

Song, dance and laughter will abound when a cast of 56 High School Students perform in the musical ‘The Originals.’

St. Martin’s Lutheran Church 25th Birthday

The building has been well used by several denominations and acted as a refuge for young evacuees from island resorts, after Cyclone Ada, in 1970. The hall has served a wide cross section of the Beach community.

Faust’s 75-year Mini Marathon

In 1910, Messrs Charlie and Joe Faust left Bowen to set up their store in Proserpine via the old coach road, from Bowen via Crystalbrook, over the river crossing.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of this event, Faust’s is organising a semi-marathon foot race with generous prizes over the same course. It was 40 years after the Faust’s arrival that the present route to Bowen was opened.

High School Athletics

Bill Woods broke the open boys long jump record and equalled the high jump mark.

Courgettes beat Zodiacs thanks to 19 points from Lyn Law in the women’s match’ while Cougars men ran out 34-16 winners over Cats.

Open Golf Foursomes Championships: Barry and Chris Stewart won a three-hole playoff.
