Warning to pavement riders
Young cyclists, and some not so young, are warned it is the intention of the police to crack down on the practice of footpath riding during school holidays.
There have been some ‘near misses’ recently with elderly people walking out of shops.
Happy minutes with Santa
Many happy young spent time with Santa Claus, on Christmas Eve. Santa was enthroned in the premises of Mackay Permanent Building Society.
More homes for Proserpine
Minister for Works and Housing, the Hon Geoff Muntz, announced that State Government has provided $198,268 for the provision of six new residences for family rental accommodation, for the Queensland Housing Commission at Proserpine. Residences will be in Lurline Drive and Anzac Road.
A daring raid on local boutique
Clothing store proprietor, Mrs Peta Leet, was the victim of one of the most casual, yet daring, shoplifting raids, when fifteen Fijians, who were part of a group of forty travelling north on a coach, managed an impromptu but obviously well-rehearsed shoplifting raid on the clothing in her shop.
Firm’s new premises show faith in district’s future
Prior to declaring open Proserpine Agency’s new premises, the Shire Chairman Cr Peter Faust congratulated the principals of that firm, Ron and Pauline Ogilvie, not only on the fine new building but also in their obvious faith in the future of the Proserpine District.
Christmas Eve
The Pipe Band played in Main Street, Proserpine, and a group from the Christian Outreach Church presented ‘Carols By Candlelight’.
The pub with no name
Until Friday, the new Cannonvale Reef Gateway Hotel Motel was nameless. Then a group of four workmen, with the help of some paint brushes, added the finishing touches to the large sign listing all the services of the new hotel and its hosts Dave and Joy Seawright.
Blind poet was Proserpine born
Lyn Tyson (nee Usher), now a 41-year-old Townsville woman who recently published a book of delightful poems, was born in Proserpine. Entitled ‘The Sea and Me’ the small volume has about fifty-five short poems with, here and there, tiny gems of Lyn’s philosophy upon life, reflecting on the deep thoughts of a blind person.
Hail at Bloomsbury
An unfamiliar sight for residents at Bloomsbury, and indeed most areas in North Queensland, is a hailstorm. Some roofs were dented but thankfully no person was injured.
