Dam Gets Green Light

The State Government approved the dam site to be constructed across Proserpine River Gorge in beautiful peaceful country, west of the town.

It is anticipated that it would be ready to receive water by 1989 and would revolutionise life in the region. The expected cost was $32 million.

Ansett Officials Meet on Hamilton Island

Unconfirmed reports stated that discussion took place about Ansett’s decision to cease using Proserpine Airport and schedule flights through Hamilton Island air strip instead. These reports were denied.

Social Worker

Council has decided to apply for a fully funded social worker for the community.

Separate Shire

At Monday’s council meeting, Cr Bob Rowley moved that Council request the investigation of the formation of a new shire, on sections of the Whitsunday Coast and surrounding islands. This would be debated at the next meeting.

To Blow Up Harbour Hill?

No decision has been made to blow up the hill at Shute Harbour, to provide further parking and business areas.

No Change in Mill Peak

The ‘peak’ quota for the Proserpine Mill would remain at 125,000 tonnes of sugar, as in 1984.

Airlie Baths Collapse

Airlie Beach swimming enclosure is in a bad state of disrepair, with two of the wooden panels collapsed. Unfortunately, before Council made any attempts at repair, a six-year-old child was hospitalised from being stung by a marine stinger.

Mrs Canefarmer Gets Support

The formation of the Women’s Support Group will help women in the cane industry. For too long, Mrs. Canefarmer has been the ‘underpaid silent working partner, more and more in demand as a sounding board, counsellor, bargain hunter, taxi, and extra farmhand,’ it was claimed.

Runs Galore in Local Cricket

Brian Filby was Valley’s star, scoring 97 in their victory over Colts and taking three wickets for 9. Centrals ran up a massive 293 total, largely thanks to a scintillating century by Peter Collingwood against Magpies, who still managed 200 runs in reply, with Stu Burns 72 top scoring.

Obituary

Sandor Alex Chengody, a well known Airlie Beach identity, died at home on Friday. Pastor Boyd Matthews conducted a memorial service in the Lutheran Church, in Cannonvale.
