Water Reliability Crucial

The water company, drawing up a five-year Development Plan for Proserpine, considers assured water for both rural and urban use as the ‘lynch-pin’. The plan will cover industry, commerce, tourism, government infrastructure and the Bicentennial project, and was closely linked to the construction of the dam.

Primary School Admissions

Proserpine State School recorded 73 grade-one children with a total enrolment of 501. St. Catherine’s enrolled 26 Year One students and Cannonvale School showed an increase in Grade One from 30 to 41 students.

High School Exams

Principal David Sutton reported 35 per cent of Year 12 students gained T.E. scores exceeding 900. The overall percentage was well above the state average.

International Tourism in Queensland.

Visitors listing Queensland as their main stay while in Australia rose by 51 per cent, from 1979 to 1983.

Citizenship Award

Town Clerk Des Erricker gained an Australia Day Award in recognition of his untiring efforts with young swimmers in the town pool. Des, one of only 19 Level Two Coaches in the state, has coached continually for almost 16 years at Proserpine Swimming Club.

Young Citizen Award

The Young Citizen Award went to Joanne Camm, who won the Queen of Hearts quest raising $17,000 for the National Heart Foundation.

Sporting Award

Darren Steele won the Sporting Award, after gaining selection for The Queensland Under 15 football team, which finished second in the National Titles.

Queensland Polocrosse Selection

18-year-old Darren Kennedy has been chosen for the State Under 21 in the Tamworth Show, in March.

Palm Trees Damaged

The palm trees in Muddy Bay, Airlie Beach, were being damaged, caused by the boats’ mooring ropes tied around their trunks.

‘D.J’ Returns

Denise Jarrott returned from an extensive course at The Royal Academy of Dance International Summer School, in Brisbane.

Bridge

Monday night’s winners were S. McDowall and F. Gregson with 61.57.

Whitsunday Seniors beat Mackay City 3-2.

Obituary

Stanley Godfrey Fuljames, an old Cannon Valley identity, died aged 83 years.

Elaine Mary Jones died, aged 43, after suffering from a long illness. She and her husband ran the Whitsunday Country Meats butcheries. Members of the Pony Club formed a Guard of Honour.
