Shute Harbour

It has taken 25 years for the name ‘Shute Bay’ to be officially changed to ‘Shute Harbour’ to publicise it as the point of departure for the Whitsundays.

Wild Storm Stirs River

5 inches [125 ml] of rain fell on Tuesday morning causing a full flow. Two metres of water was flowing strongly beneath the bridge on the highway.

Chamber Wants Forum for Shire Chairman Candidates

The Chamber of Commerce is seeking to arrange for the three candidates to appear in a forum at the Cultural Hall.

Road To Collinsville Priced

Main Roads Minister Russell Hinze advised that a two-lane bitumen road would cost about $15 million.

‘Learning By Doing’

The teacher in charge of Proserpine’s Special Education Unit, Pat Miller, described how the unit caters for a wide range of children with special needs, when addressing a meeting of Lionesses and Rotary-annes. Children found the emphasis of learning by doing enjoyable.

Dingo Beach Road

A $50,000 contribution from Lands Administration Commission will allow improvements to Dingo Road to be completed by June.

First TAFE Course Completed

13 students from TAFE’s Tourism and Hospitality Course, on South Molle Island, graduated on Saturday. Co-ordinator Jan Maltby commented on the success of the course when certificates were presented.

Bridge

24 people from Bowen Bridge Club joined the Proserpine evening on Monday. Winners were D and M. Orr, J. Clay and A. Pini.

Tree Planting Proposal

Proserpine Wildlife Preservation Society proposed planting of native trees alongside roads, notably along the Shute Harbour Road, in Cannonvale. It was pointed out that this was one of the conditions for the developers.

Cheque For Baton Twirlers

Faust’s Department Store offered a $100 cheque to the community organisation who formed the longest queue outside the store. The Baton Twirlers won with a 60-person queue. Daniel Inderwisch has been chosen to represent North Queensland in the State Primary School Titles.

Rugby League

Whitsunday won their first Foley Shield match of the season, defeating Herbert River 24-12.

Obituaries

Roland George Kilian, an ex-serviceman who had been taken as a prisoner of war by the Japanese in WWII, died in hospital, aged 78.

Gladys Lawrie passed away in Townsville General Hospital, leaving four children and their families to mourn her sad loss.

Mary Ellen Hansen died, aged 101 years. She is survived by eight children.
