Five O’Clock – River Breaks
Following a week of torrential rain, with over 400mls in some places, the Proserpine River eventually yielded and burst its banks despite the valiant efforts of 150 volunteers, who spent all day sandbagging a suspected weak point. The breaking point was about 75 metres upstream from the Bob Shepherd Bridge. Many streets had already gone underwater, and the Bruce Highway was closed.
Crash Victim Freed by Backhoe
A backhoe and heavy chain were needed to pull a wrecked car apart at Shute Harbour and release a driver suffering from shocking injuries to both legs. His thigh was crushed as the door crumpled and the other leg was shattered as the dashboard caved in.

Dot Stagg Retires
After 43 years of teaching, 31 of which were at the local school, Dot Stagg retired. Speaking at a farewell function attended by friends and former pupils in her honour, Charlie Law recalled the high esteem held for Dot by at least two generations of students. Dot’s first rented house in town had galvanised iron walls and a partly earthen floor. Her husband Les would also be retiring next year.
Therapy Centre Opens in Airlie
A therapy centre for physio, chiropody and natural therapy has opened. Physiotherapist Catherine Welsh has practised in Victoria and the UK, before coming to Airlie.
