Local Cane Grower Elected to Canegrowers Council

Proserpine cane grower Kelso Greenwood has been elected to the position of junior vice chairman of Queensland Cane Growers Council.

Proserpine Rodeo

Del-Maree Holden on her horse Yellow Jacket is this year’s Proserpine Rodeo Queen. Despite wet weather, this year’s rodeo was one of the best held in the district with a high quality of stock and competitor skills on display. Champion Cowboy resulted in a tie between Norm Stagg and David Keioskie.

‘Water Resources in The Whitsunday Area’

A water symposium was due to be held in Airlie to discuss desalination, provision of water for the Condor Shale Oil Project and urban water supply.

High School Display of Batik Art

A colourful display of art by high school students was mounted by art Teacher Peter Traynor at Proserpine’s Commonwealth Bank, this week.

Lions Encourage Leos

Proserpine’s Lion’s Zone Chairman Ross Smith presented the Leo Charter to President Patrick Barry, encouraging the Leos to follow in the footsteps of the Lions by showing leadership in the area.

Art Show in Airlie

A large number of people attended Richard Timperley’s art show at The Islands Inn Restaurant, in Airlie, on Sunday.

Red Cross Donation

Airlie Beach Rotaract Club collected $300 for the Red Cross Appeal. At the same meeting, Ron McDowell, president of Probus Club, described the Road Safety Project that was being carried out at Cannonvale School.

Triumph For Airlie Bloods

The Bloods enhanced their reputation as a top team in the area with a resounding victory against East Mackay, in the reserve grade. Final Score was Bloods 18-21-129 East Mackay 1-3-9.

Gymnastics Club at High School

This has started on two lunch times and one afternoon per week at the school. The initial response from students has been good. Newcomers of any standard will be welcome.

Sports Champs in Town

At Rugby League’s annual Sports Night, Australian reps in a number of sports will be present. League – Gene Miles, Union – Paul Mclean, Cricket – Martin Kent, Squash – Cam Nancarrow, Swimming – Paul Quilan.

Junior Soccer

Six teams aged Under 8 to under 14 played Bowen, on Sunday.

Rugby Union

Raiders lost a close game 4-11 to Glendon.

Junior League

Proserpine Under 9s beat St. Mary’s 42-0 with big contributions from Patrick Toomey, Paul Bowman and S. Holcombe.

Whitsunday League

Whitsunday League beat Foley Shield Champions Mackay Sea Eagles 8-6.
