Peter Chengody For Qld Country

Proserpine – Airlie Beach Rugby Union half-back Peter Chengody has been selected for Queensland Country team to tour New Zealand next week.

It is thought that this talented footballer will be a great ambassador for the Whitsunday area.

As well, club members Russell Chapman, Jim McCormack and Andy Camm won places in North Queensland teams.

Obituary

Rubina Caroline Short

88-year-old Mrs. Short and her husband Alan were farmers in the Proserpine area for many years.

Water To the Coast

Loans from State Government Insurance helped lay a new pipeline to the coast, to tap the latest bores at Foxdale, which will increase the supply rate to the beach by a rate of 52 litres per person.

Aesthetics of Airlie Beach

A new committee has been formed to look into the beautification of Airlie Beach foreshore. Lack of funds was a problem.

Last year, $30,000 was spent on deepening and widening Airlie Creek. Consideration was being given for a tidal pool, a lagoon, a sandy beach or stinger nets on the main beach.

High School Observations:

Year 11 Camp

Year 11 Camp will go ahead with a three-day camp at Cape Hillsborough, near Mackay.

This year’s musical

This year’s musicalwill be ‘Originals’ set in the New South Wales colony, in the 1800s. A cast of sixty students will bring music, comedy, drama and adventure to audiences.

Resuscitation For Blue Nurses

Ambulance Man Harry Benjamin participated in a cardio-pulmonary refresher course for members of the Blue Nursing Service.

Boxing

Proserpine’s newly established Boxing Club is now operating at Buffalo Hall. All newcomers are welcome.

May Day Regatta

Whitsunday Sailing Club held a most successful regatta, with 98 boats competing over five different courses.

Boats came from sailing centres between Cairns down to Brisbane. Special thanks were expressed to Charlie and Ros Law for their help.

Basketball

The season is half over and being contested energetically by thirteen teams.

Cricket Breakup

Patron Keith Jeffries welcomed the many attendees and presented the awards for the season. Player of the year award winner was Peter Collingwood.

Associate Golf

Townsville golfer Netta McCullough set a new course record for Associates with rounds of 75 and 74, her gross of 149 being nine strokes ahead of runner-up Kim Hadlow.
