Nellie Bay Squatters

Those who have been ‘in residence on the beach’ prior to 1981 will be offered blocks on lease from the 41 blocks under present LAC development. The relevant government act is being modified to empower the LAC to evict the squatters. The Department are to announce a plan to establish a caravan park and a boat ramp at Dingo Beach.

Obituary

Noel William Austin, aged 54 years, collapsed and died while swimming in the Island Traders swimming pool.

Nine Days for Council Staff?

The possibility of a nine-day fortnight would be discussed with the Municipal Officers Association early in the New Year.

Windermere Reunion

The response has been good. Transport had been arranged from Main Street [Proserpine].

Successful Pensioners Dinner

A happy crowd of ninety-four old people attended the annual event provided by Proserpine Lions, Rotarians and ESA ladies, at the Golf Club. Entertainment was provided in the form of dancing and baton twirling, with music from Fay’s Five.

Land For Whitsunday Air Sea Rescue Squad

A quarter-hectare block, opposite the Cannonvale Police Station, is soon to be assigned to the Whitsunday Air Sea Rescue squad, which is flourishing with over 200 members and a hardworking Ladies Auxiliary.

Kettlewells Win Car Rally

The third annual WCDA and Proserpine Mill Car Rally was won by Peter and Fiona Kettlewell, from Airlie Beach. Second prize went to Mrs. Ted Pointing.

Shute Hill Blasting

Councillor Shim questioned whether the erection of a raised carpark would be preferable to further demolition of the hill, at Shute Harbour. It was suggested that at least 10 marinas were also being planned for the shire, including at least two firms vying for the rights at Muddy Bay.

Cricket

Five junior teams took on Ayr with wins for the Under 11s, Under 12s, Under 13s and Under14s.

Proserpine Swimming Carnival

The standard was very high with strong teams from twelve clubs participating and 28 new pool records were set. Donna Mengel was the most outstanding local swimmer. Donna improved in every swim.
