Outstanding young swimmers recognised

Must read

TWO outstanding junior Whitsunday swimmers were welcomed to the Ordinary Council meeting in Proserpine recently.

Alex and Axel Yuskan are ffinancially supported by council under the Junior Elite Athletes Initiative.

They were presented with gift bags by Mayor Julie Hall at the council meeting, on Wednesday, April 12.

Alex and Axel Yuskan represented the Whitsunday Swimming Club in February at the 2023 Hancock Prospecting Queensland Sprint Swimming Championships, where the two boys raced against over 2,500 competitors from across Queensland.

Alex competed in the 15-year-old category for the 50m freestyle and the 50m backstroke and recorded a personal best in his freestyle swim.

Axel competed in the 10-year-old category for the 50m freestyle and recorded a personal best by nearly two seconds at his very first state competition.

Both Alex and Axel now have their sights set on recording new personal best times at the 2024 swimming championship.

Whitsunday Regional Council provides a grant for junior elite athletes who are participating in a representative competition at regional, State or National level.

The grant is provided to assist in meeting the costs associated with participating in a representative sports program.
