GREY Nomads visiting the Whitsundays might have to rethink their travel plans now that the Proserpine RV Rest Stop is closed.
The Proserpine RV rest stop, just off Main Street, Proserpine, is due to close permanently today, Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
The move comes after Whitsunday Regional Council voted not to renew the lease going forward, in the most recent council meeting, on Wednesday, September 27, 2023.
This is due to development approval conditions requiring the installation of drainage, lighting and appropriate carpark seal to the parking area.
The estimated of cost of the upgrades was more than $600,000, which was not in the 2023-2024 Budget, according to council.
“The works would have needed to be undertaken on land not owned by council and ownership of the upgrades would have returned to the landowner at the end of the lease,” a spokesperson said.
“It is council’s intent to continue to invest in developing the staged masterplan for Lake Proserpine, which now caters for lakeside camping with boat ramp and jetty, pontoons, on-site managers and kiosk, glamping options and barbecue facilities.”
