THE GREAT Barrier Reef Festival celebrates life in the Whitsundays at the heart of the reef.
The 2022 event will be held from August 4 to August 7.
Proudly bought to you by Cruise Whitsundays, the Great Barrier Reef Festival takes pride in connecting the reef to the shore and celebrates everything that’s great about living in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.
The family-friendly event has something for everyone, from the Friday Night Fireworks and live music, to the Revvin’ the Reef Car Show, a free Family Fun Day, Comedy Gala and much more!
New to the Great Barrier Reef Festival is the Immerse Underwater Art Installation – Bringing the reef to the Airlie Beach foreshore, created using recycled products.
Creating an underwater marine wonderland
The Immerse installation is underway!
Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, at this year’s festival.
The newest addition to the program – ‘IMMERSE – WHITSUNDAYS’ – is an art installation under the monumental fig tree, on the Airlie Beach Foreshore.
The fig trees will once again be transformed into a spectacular underwater marine wonderland complete with fish, coral and other marine creatures – all made from recycled materials and marine debris.
The community was invited to get involved with creating the art installation project, with a community workshop, on Sunday July 10, as part of the lead-up to this year’s Great Barrier Reef Festival.
Local artists have been involved in the design and build of the sculpture including Anita Pender, Brigitte Peel and Liz Knight from Positive Creations Glass Art, and Margie Murphy, Event Art Director. Thanks also to facilitators Donna Maree Robinson and Margaret Burgess Art.
The Immerse Whitsundays Art Installation will be a central focus of the festival and can be viewed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
