THE CHURCH in St Martin’s Lane, Cannonvale, has been standing there unassumingly since 1960, after an acre of land was donated to the Lutheran Church, by the Peach and Hutcheson Families.
The church, known colloquially as simply ‘St Martin’s’, looks out towards Cannonvale Beach and was named after St. Martin’s in The Field, in London, because back then it was a church in a field with no houses!
Since then, it has been shared by several Christian groups, and it still is.
Sunday worship times at St. Martin’s are as follows:
7.30am Uniting Church
10am Baptist Church
3pm Lutheran Church [fourth Sunday each month]
6pm Roman Catholic Church Mass.
A Uniting Church spokesperson said ‘a friendly atmosphere abounds, as people meet to follow their friend Jesus and accept his encouragement to live lives of kindness and forgiveness’.
“New arrivals are greeted joyfully, and our prayer is that you find a place to ask questions and come to know our best friend Jesus Christ,” the spokesperson said.
“Peace be with you all.”
