I HOPE everyone had a nice Valentine’s Day on Tuesday (February 14)?
It’s a funny day, as the story about Saint Valentine dates back to the third century, and the history is a little sketchy, to say the least!
But on the other hand, it’s kind of nice that a day that connects people through love is still around, nearly two thousand years later.
I think, in the 21st century, we can give the day a broader definition and extend it to just loving your cat or dog a little extra with a treat, or doing something nice for your neighbour.
Shop locally
Valentine’s Day is also another opportunity to shop locally.
We ran a lovely Valentine’s Day feature in last week’s WN with The Jungle Trader (beautiful homewares), Sofi & Flora (flowers), 3 Little Birds Espresso (art classes), Opal Earth (gorgeous jewellery), MIKA (‘the best wings in town’) and The Beauty Room (beauty treatments, including gift vouchers).
I understand the convenience of online shopping, but we also need to support our local retailers and service providers.
Use it or lose it, as they say.
Meanwhile…
It seems to be a week of celebrities this week, with Tim the ‘Today Show’ weatherman doing live weather crosses in the Whitsundays – see story page 5.
And Glen McGrath is making an appearance at the Pink Stumps Day, in Bowen, on Saturday – see story page 5.
And talking of celebrities, we have heard a rumour that a well-known singer/actress is in the region filming – we’ll try and bring you more on that in next week’s WN.
Positive vibes
I have said before, in this column, that I am feeling a sense of positivity around the Whitsunday region.
And I think it’s a really positive thing that the Mayor’s Annual Charity Ball will be held again this year (on July 22) after a pause of four years.
It will be the first Mayoral Ball since 2019, due to the COVID pandemic putting the stoppers on it.
While we know COVID is still in our community, it is nice to see events such as this coming back, after a tough few years.
If you are holding an event, let us know. Email news@whitsundaynews.net.au
As always, thanks for reading this newspaper.
Deborah.
