Whitsunday News Column

Must read

A VISION for the Whitsundays. It sounds lovely doesn’t it?

But to get to the point of having a vision, that everyone is happy with, is going to take hard work!

Hats off to the Whitsunday Coast Chamber of Commerce (recently merged with the Proserpine Chamber of Commerce), which held a launch, last week, to start the quest to find a unifying vision for our region.

I say ‘unifying’ because we really are so diverse – from reef to rainforest, from coal to tourism, from fruit and veg to sugar cane, and a myriad of other industries amongst all of this.

We are blessed with so many natural wonders, so much beauty and so much produce.

We have to ensure that our forward progression – and there must be development to keep up with our growing population – is not at odds with our environment.

Get on board with the development of this vision – there is a lot of political, business and community power behind it – see story page 1.

Coming up…

June is a great month in the Whitsundays for families.

We have both our agricultural shows in June – one in Proserpine and one in Bowen – and there is also the hugely popular Dingo Beach WhitFUN Day.

Get up early, grab yourself a dagwood dog and have some fun with the fam!

Rounding out a great events extravaganza, in June, we have the Flavours of Bowen Festival, on Saturday, June 3, and the Whitsunday Regional Council Queensland Day celebrations, at the PEC, on Sunday, June 4.

What a month – who says there’s nothing for kids to do in the Whitsundays!

And that’s on top of the many sporting options for kids every weekend – see sport pages 27-32.

Lastly

And talking of sport, if you want to try something completely different this weekend, the Whitsunday Blokart Club is holding an Open Day, on Conway Beach, this Sunday (May 28).

Described as ‘sailing on sand’ you can try this exhilarating sport at the free event – blokarts are available. Take closed-in shoes and a bike helmet if you have one (otherwise the club can provide a helmet). More details on the Whitsunday Blokart Club Facebook page.

As always, thanks for reading this newspaper.

Deborah.
