ANOTHER COLD snap, as I write this (on Tuesday, August 16).
There was a brief spell last week of balmier weather but it looks like we might have to wait until September to mothball the Ugg boots for another year!
All the chatter this week is about who will be our new Mayor.
I hope everyone managed to get out and vote on Saturday – it is so important who leads this region over the coming years.
The Whitsunday News was out and about taking photos at the polling booths – see pages 18 and 19.
See story page 5.
Meanwhile
There’s been lots going on in the Whitsundays recently.
The hugely successful 21st Great Barrier Reef Festival concluded, last Sunday, only to be followed very quickly by the Airlie Beach Race Week Festival of Sailing, which started on Thursday, August 11 and goes until Thursday, August 18.
Both events draw thousands of visitors to our region, all eager to spend their money!
Talking of which, there was another cruise ship docked in Pioneer Bay, on Sunday.
I was lucky enough to be cycling the trails on South Molle Island that day, with Bike and Hike Whitsunday, and I snapped a pic of Race Week yachts sailing in front of the ship – see page 3.
In other news
This week, there’s been an on-the-run alleged killer caught in Proserpine, and a 2.9 metre croc caught at Laguna Quays – see both stories pages 3.
We also bring you our fortnightly Tourism in Our Region page, and we have heaps of community stories this week (pages 10 to 13) – please keep them coming (news@whitsundaynews.net.au).
As always, thanks for reading this newspaper.
Deborah.
