Youngsters get ready for work

Must read

THE MOST recent PCYC ‘Get Set for Work’ program has been hailed another success.

The program, operated locally through PCYC Whitsunday, Jubilee Pocket, helps young people get into work including work experience placements, industry visits and certified training.

The Graduation Ceremony was held on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at the PCYC.

PCYC’s Sergeant Billy Li said nine participants graduated in the program and all participants completed a Cert II Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways.

“Participants went on a variety of different work experience placements to local businesses,” he said.

“These included Red Cat Adventures, Master Butchers Whitsundays – On the Barbie, Good Start Early Learning, Silk Hair Airlie Beach, and The Friendly Grocer supermarket.”

Industry visits included McDonalds – Cannonvale, Cruise Whitsundays, Tassal Prawn Farm, Wilmar Sugar Australia – Proserpine Mill, Big W, Bunnings, Airlie Beach Hotel, Master Butchers Whitsundays, and the Bowen and Cannonvale TAFEs.

There were also day trips to Whitehaven Beach, courtesy of Whitsunday Water Police, and Hamilton Island, courtesy of Cruise Whitsundays, as well as a jet skiing tour, courtesy of Whitsunday Jet Ski Tours.

Certified training, funded for participants on this intake, included Construction White Cards, First Aid, Elements of Shipboard Safety, Working with Children Blue Card, Prep Ls and Learners Licences.

Program Co-ordinator Scott Lynch said the most recent intake had been ‘another fantastic success’ with some great outcomes achieved by participants.

“We determine success based on three key indicators: Finding employment, pursuing further education or training, and returning to school,” he said.

“I’m pleased to share that, from all those who started the intake, eight achieved successful outcomes.

“It’s always rewarding to see them reach their goals at the end of the intake, and it makes all the effort we put in truly worthwhile.”

The next intake starts on October 8, 2024, and is the final one for the year. Email Sgt Billy Li at billy.li@pcyc.org.au.

‘Get Set for Work’ is one of eight programs that make up the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
